Katagami: This is Going To Be *Really Hard* Folks

We're polishing up the puzzle design for our new Katagami puzzle, and making sure it's really hard.

The image started out as a black-and-white 19th century Japanese stencil, an artwork called Katagami. We loved its oddly contemporary op-art look, so we asked Spanish artist Elisa Lara Campos to color it, and now it really pops!

We're aiming for a really hard puzzle with this one, and I think our aim is true.

First-off, this isn't a puzzle where you can sort by color - here's a sneak peek of some random pieces from an early test cut, it's just a wild west of pieces:

Second, this will be hard because you aren't going to be able to sort the edge pieces out, because we've gone with an irregular edge that arises naturally out of the piece shapes.

Third, this one is tough because we had puzzle designer David Figueiras do this one with nestled spiral loops where three pieces swirl together: Nestled spiral loop pieces are not quite as hard a style as our split tendril connector pieces, but they are still pretty tricky on the brain!

And lastly, we put zero whimsies in this one, because whimsies make a puzzle easier :).

We're still futzing with this one, but we expect to release it late June!

Oh, my!! Out of my league for sure!! But a delight to observe. Hopefully some brave puzzlers will survive the experience and give us some reviews!
