This is a 169-piece wooden jigsaw puzzle of "Saltimbanques," the 1888 painting by French painter Fernand Pelez which depicts the miserableness of 19th century circus life.
We keep this one from being too easy with non-unique piece connectors, angular piece shapes, and just a few themed whimsies. Puzzle design by Jef Bambas.
Like all our puzzles, made of 1/4" thick laser-cut wood and made in the USA. Packaged in a blue box with a magnetic clasp. Made in the USA.

A mature, behind the scenes depiction of circus ennui. The detailed image fascinates me, the coloration is fabulous and the circus whimsies are fantastic! This is a wonderful puzzle.

This is an easy/average difficult puzzle. Its long horizontal format makes the different characters read as the different ages of human beings, from childhood to old age. There is something eerie about the painting, think aesthetic of the classic movie "Freaks" by Tod Browning. And think circus as a metaphor of life. The artist Fernand Pelez was at first doing historical paintings, and then he turned his attention to the destitute people, preferring documenting real lives. Fun fact: this painting was displayed in fairs! What really caught my attention were the shoes: what an interesting collection! Ancestors of Doc Martens! Also, the setting looks pretty much like a collage, making the puzzle interesting to put together. As mentioned above, Jef Bambas lightens up the image by adding fun circus whimsies. This is an exquisite dialogue between an academic trained painter from the 19th century with a designer from the 21st century.

There is something gloomy about the painting, think the movie "Freaks" by Tod Browning where the "freaks" displayed in fairs are the most human ones, whereas the "normal people" around are just petty and exploitative. And think circus as a metaphor of life. Pretty heavy stuff. The artist Fernand Pelez was at first doing historical paintings, and then he turned his attention to the destitute people, preferring documenting real lives than grandiloquent mythological stories. Good for him, but it killed his career, because again, heavy stuff! The very classical depiction of the young girls is very delicate. And man, the shoes on the painting are just amazing: what an interesting collection! Also, the setting is very collage like, making the puzzle interesting to put together. Like the description above mentioned it, Jef Bambas lightens up the image by adding fun circus whimsies.
