This is a 120 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle of a charmingly detailed painting by Ukrainian painter Valentin Rekunenko. The puzzle is actually oval-shaped, with some of the image detail not shown in the product image (or on the box sticker). When the pieces tumble out of the box, they all look a bit brown, and it takes a few minutes to discover the subtle shade differences and exquisitely-painted details. The puzzle pieces were designed by Tara Flannery, with reverse mushroom-curl connectors and whimsy pieces that echo the image. Its difficulty is about average. Like all our puzzles, the pieces are laser-cut from 1/4" thick wood. Packaged in a small blue box with a magnetic clasp. Made in USA.

Manufacturer recommended age: 15 years and up

Review: While we love all puzzles and enjoy working them, this wasn't a favorite for us. We enjoyed the process of putting it together, but wouldn't work this one again.

Review: This small puzzle was fun to put together, but ultimately less satisfying than most of my other Artifact puzzles, because the puzzle was small enough that that it was hard to see details in the painting over the cuts in the puzzle. I like the image, but the colors are kind of drab, which made the puzzle less interesting to work. The whimsies were fun and I liked the oval shape, but this is one I probably won't do again.

Review: Royal Bookseller is a fun puzzle. The whimsies illustrate the humor and wit that Rekunenko put into his painting. For the longest while I thought one whimsey was a teakettle. Finally, when looking at the finished puzzle, the light dawned. You might enjoy this quote from the artist. “Art is a world of fantasy, where everything is possible. Once I visited it, I understood that it is my house.” ~ Valentin Rekunenko It’s a nice little puzzle. Pieces are just the right size and easy to handle for old fingers. Colors are subtle and subdued, but not hard to work on my dark wood table. It probably took me an hour-and-a-half to put together--enjoyed the finished shape. Young and old can enjoy this one.

Review: I am constantly surprised and delighted by the images selected to become Artifact puzzles! Rekunenko’s Royal Bookseller is a fantasy microcosm I thoroughly enjoyed being drawn into. All that warm French grey/beige, crisp detail and stunning pops of color made for a very sensorial puzzling experience. I like puzzles of all sizes. Smaller puzzles like this offer a happy break in the day.
