This is a 287 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle of Jan Brueghel the Younger's 1645 painting Allegory of Music. The puzzle has many whimsy pieces shaped like musical instruments, knob connectors, and the pieces form a grid of circles and squares; puzzle design by Tara Flannery. This puzzle has a straight edge and average difficulty. Like all our puzzles, the pieces are laser-cut from 1/4" thick wood. Packaged in our standard pine wood box. Made in USA.

Review: Giving Bruegel's Music Room puzzle 3-stars means I rate it "average" for an Artifact puzzle. To me, Artifact puzzles are already so much more engaging and interesting than run-of-the-mill non-wooden puzzles, so the Music Room is still above average compared to most puzzles out in the world. However, while enjoyable, I don't think the beauty, piece construction or complexity can compare with the numerous other Artifact puzzles I've now done, which all rate 4-5 stars in my book. To be fair, I was given the puzzle as a gift (actually how I was introduced to Artifact), so it isn't one I chose myself. But reflecting on its modest size and relatively low complexity, I wouldn't pay the current price for this puzzle, while I am happy to treat myself to other juicier puzzles in the Artifact catalog, at the same price point or higher. An element of this puzzle I find distracting is that the beautiful cloudscape, and actual spatial depth of the image, is strongly broken by the dark burn discolorations around the edge of each piece from the laser cutting. I don't know if this is due to the light color of the sky or an older cutting technique that has now been improved (I received this in 2016), but such image distortion seems far worse on this puzzle than on any other I have. So, yes, enjoyable, but there are many other Artifact puzzles that I find much more worthy of the financial investment.

Review: Not too difficult and quite fun with the construction around the circle pieces. The composition of this painting looks like a collage of different scenes put together. It's a very interesting artistic mess: landscapes, interiors, animals (real and imaginary), humans, instruments thrown here and there (amongst them some mysterious ones), and isn't the mission of a puzzler to restore some kind of order? Probably a lot of symbols are thrown into the painting, symbols that are now cryptic to us but made it pleasantly intriguing.

Review: Easier than I expected because of the way the pieces alternate between circles and squares, but that made it prefect for doing with the nieces (7 and 10), and the image and the old art sparked talking about different instruments and how things were different back when this was painted.
