This 318 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle is a whimsically neo-surrealist steampunk 16th-century Netherlandish-inspired image of hippos jousting, painted by Idaho artist Bill Carman in 2012. Its full title is "Begin at the Sound of the Golden Whistle," and it is richly detailed. The puzzle pieces are tri-hexagonal shapes with a smattering of special whimsy pieces themed to the image; the puzzle cuts were designed by Tara Flannery. The puzzle is harder than average. Like all our puzzles, the puzzle pieces are laser-cut from 1/4" thick wood. Made in USA. Packaged in our standard unfinished pine wood box.

My wife and I had a blast with this puzzle. Lots of whimsical pieces that echo themes from the richly detailed art, and I even found several pieces that join to recreate the outline of a figure in the painting. Very cool, lots of fun and highly recommended. Note: the edges of this puzzle are zig zag, not straight as the photo would suggest.

I liked the tri-hex piece shapes on this - they added to the strange myth world of the painting. They also made the puzzle harder than I expected. The weird dark stone faces don't show up as clearly as I'd have liked, but otherwise the painting is full of finely-painted Jungian details.
