In this recent article, the Economist tackles the question, "Why do women earn less than men on average?" and present statistics showing that some of the wage gap comes from the average gal scaling back on aggressively engaging in "paid work time" to spend more time on (unpaid-for) child-rearing, suggesting that for women, having kids comes with a potentially significant opportunity cost. While it's a bit frustrating to see the Economist essentially claiming that women are choosing to earn less by having children, it's also not terribly surprising to see the statistics show that when the average woman has kids, she is more likely than the father to end up cutting-back on career engagement in a way that costs her.
