The Washington Post just put out an excellent set of online maps showing where the US gets hit by floods, lightning, tornados, wildfires... 

Did you know floods cause the most deaths per year for the US on average?

Or that there are 17 million lightning strikes a year over America?

Here's the set of online maps.

Last year in California, we had record wildfires in part due to the preceeding years of drought drying everything out. This year, here in California we had a very wet winter, and you'd think that high rainfall would be a good thing to reduce the chance of summer wildfires. But nothing is that simple - the wet winter means a lot of grasses/vegetation grew up, and if it dries out in the hot summer, it might provide fuel to any new fires. More from NOAA here.
