This is a 145 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle of "Nocturne" by Kawase Hasui. The beautiful Japanese woodblock print has an unusual puzzle design by Jef Bambas that consists of tessellated interlocking fish pieces and an irregular edge, which makes this puzzle really hard. It also has another secret special feature. NOTE: The irregular edge is not shown in the image on the box!

Our Ecru Puzzles line is characterized by a closer cut and a matte finish to reduce glare. Like all our puzzles, made of 1/4" thick laser-cut wood and made in the USA. Packaged in a blue box with a magnetic clasp.

Review: Watch for colors that don't quite match. I also appreciated the hint to turn this puzzle over — thanks! It's beautiful on both sides.

Review: Once you see how the fish interlock, it's not too hard. Nice surprise when you turn the puzzle over!

Review: This puzzle is meditative. You know the feeling when you suddenly know a piece and its location come together without conscious thought. You experience a lot of that with this puzzle. The fish are confusingly similar so looking for a shape is tuned down and you are operating at a gestalt level. Be sure to flip it over when finished and maybe try to solve it upside down next time.

Review: This was my very first Artifact puzzle; with more than twenty under my belt, I still think I chose well. Like many Artifacts, it rewards being done twice, once face up and once face down. The image looks intimidatingly monochrome at first, but subtle differentiations in shade soon become apparent, and with a little practice it's easy to pick out the edge fishes from the rest of the shoal, so to speak, which helps give structure. There's also just enough whimsies to give you a starting place to build around without eliminating the challenge of the tessellation cut. If you're wondering whether you'd like tessellation cuts or not, this is great place to start.
