| | | | | Home » Seurat Eiffel Tower Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle | | | | | | WARNING:| CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs. |
| | | Description: | | This 135 piece puzzle is surprisingly challenging because there are only two different cuts to the pieces (so many pieces fit many places), and there are lots of false edges (which does help you realize you've gone wrong...). To see example pieces, click the little photo beneath the puzzle picture above. (We also offer now this image as an easier puzzle with whimsy pieces.) The fastest completion time we know of was 2 hours. The puzzle image is an 1898 pointillist painting by Georges Seurat. Seurat was influenced by the 19th century new scientific discoveries about color vision to paint with colorful dots that average out to desired colors, a technique that came to be called pointillism, and which is also the basis for most modern color printing (where it is called halftoning). Seurat is perhaps most famous for his pointillist painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grand Jatte. This painting came just a few years later, and shortly after the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 for the World's Fair. At the time it was built, it was the tallest tower in the world. Eiffel's plans for the tower had originally been rejected by Barcelona, and the Parisian public at first felt it was an eyesore. Now, of course, it is arguably the most famous icon of Paris.

Next to impossible to put togetherJan 03, 2010
By I. Pustilnik Yes, I am serious. I gave this to my wife who loves Liberty Puzzles. The price of this Artifact puzzle is much lower but it is still a real wood jigsaw puzzle. However this particular one is impossible to figure out how to put together. You can't really find the pieces by the shape (check out the pics) or by the colors.
Gratifying challengeMar 07, 2011
By Sheffy I bought this puzzle after the reviews cried out how hard it is--and because I'm a big fan of the Impressionist painter Seurat. I got my money's worth--for a puzzle with a mere 135 pieces, it did occupy me and my cousin for about 16 hours. With many pieces that look like edges but aren't really, you can't rely on standard puzzle strategies, but have to find new ways to solve it. I even thought I was down to the last piece, only to discover I had made an error and had to backtrack. But in the end, it was a sense of pride to have conquered Seurat and leaped the Eiffel tower in a single bound (well, 3 days).
Beautiful but diabolicalJan 04, 2011
By Artifact Puzzle Fan This is an exceptionally beautiful puzzle, but by far the most difficult of the many Artifact puzzles I've done. It was too frustrating, since many of the pieces are the same shape and there isn't much contrast in the color.
Challenging and funDec 27, 2010
By JLCraw This was the most challenging puzzle I've done of under 200 pieces. The tower and bottom were doable because of the color changes. In fact I did all but the right side in an hour or two. But the last 15-20 pieces were impossible because the colors of the pieces are pretty uniform in that area. I probably tried putting in those pieces a couple dozen times, always ending up with 3 or 4 pieces that would not fit in the remaining spaces. It was very gratifying when I finally found the solution. This puzzle should only be attempted by a serious puzzler.
