5The Antidote for a Rainy AfternoonNov 18, 2011
By Gary L. Connely
Artifact Puzzles is a small company in Seattle, specializing in wooden jigsaw puzzles. These are not puzzels for young children - the pieces are small, intricately cut and are a challenge even for adults.

"Accolade," a picture painted by Edmond Blair Leighton in 1901, is a typical Artifact product. The picture is printed using soy-based inks and bonded to quarter inch plywood. The pieces are then cut using a laser - this results in a very clean, precise cut - and also allows the creation of very complicated pieces - false edges, half corners, a little castle, a cat or two....

The puzzle is small - no more than 6 by 9 1/2 inches - so you don't need to reserve half of your dining room table. And with only 85 pieces it won't take you more than an hour or so - but that doesn't mean that it's not challenging, (by the way, if you're one of those puzzlers who likes to refer to the picture, you'll be doubly challenged - the picture included with the puzzle is about the size of a postage stamp).

The puzzle is packaged in a colorful drawstring pouch, (some of the larger Artifact puzzles are packed in very cool wooden boxes).

If you're a puzzler, you owe it to yourself to try at least one Artifact puzzle.
