The Mad Tea Party Won't Make You Mad, But It Will Make You HappyMar 05, 2012
By Gary L. Connely As far as I can tell, there are three reasons to visit Seattle: Boeing, which owns the skies; Microsoft, which owns everything else; and Artifact Puzzles, which doesn't own much of anything, but makes some of the coolest wooden jigsaw puzzles you'll ever find outside of Victorian England.
Every Artifact Puzzle is a little work of art - they take high quality photographic reproductions; print them with colorful, soy-based inks; and then bond the pictures to 1/4 inch plywood. The puzzle is cut using a very precise laser technology - yeilding very complicated and intricate little pieces - and I should stress LITTLE - these are small puzzles - the "Mad Tea Party" has 206 pieces, but it's only 8 by 14 inches, (or thereabouts). Like those old English puzzle cutters, Artifact loves "whimsies," - the "Mad Tea Party" includes pieces shaped like tea pots, tea cups, cats, mushrooms, a dancing hatter, (now there's an intricate cut for you)..., not to mention false edges and fake corners....
Artifact cautions that their puzzles are not suitable for young children because the pieces are small enough to be a choking hazard - and really, I think the puzzles are too difficult for children younger than ten, or so, (now I'll get comments from Amazon customers whose children are puzzle prodigies), but presuming that they like "picture puzzles," older kids and adults will have a fun couple of hours with the "Mad Tea Party," (and if their only jigsaw experience has been with the cardboard kind - an Artifact puzzle will REALLY be a treat).
