| | | Description: | | This 301 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle is an 1899 illustration of Sea Squirts by German naturalist Haeckel. Sea squirts are a class of sea creatures a bit like barnacles, but more colorful in every way, and difficult to raise in captivity, so most people never get to see one (search wikipedia.org article for "Ascidiacea" for more information). This puzzle has unique pieces reminiscent of the geometric forms of sea squirts and other such sealife, designed by Seattle artist Maria Berg. Like all our puzzles, made of 1/4" wood in Seattle, USA. Packaged in a pine wood box. | | | Features: | |

Gorgeous puzzle, wonderful piece designNov 27, 2011
By Daniel T. Egnor Like all of Artifact Puzzles' offerings, this is made from laser cut wood. The pieces have a fine fit and a fantastic feel, and the image is tightly detailed and lacquered to bring out the detail and make the colors pop.
The product image doesn't really do the art here justice. Haeckel was a 19th century naturalist famous for his illustrations of animals and sea creatures. You might not think sea squirts are particularly interesting but in fact they are fantastic and wonderful, like alien moon-creatures, all different in style and color. Some are spiny, some are cratered, some are covered in filigree, some look like a Faberge egg.
Where this puzzle is unique (as far as I know!) is that the shape of the pieces mirrors the style of the sea squirts -- each part of the puzzle has a different texture to it. (And all of the pieces are much more interesting than your basic jigsaw "innies" and "outies".) This may be my favorite Artifact Puzzle for that reason; the shapes and the image interrelate in a really satisfying way.
If you like jigsaw puzzles even a little tiny bit, I promise you will not regret this purchase!

My favorite Artifact PuzzleJan 04, 2011
By Artifact Puzzle Fan This is my favorite Artifact Puzzle, although several others come close (Hummingbirds and Varangian come to mind). It's gorgeous, and great fun to put together. Artifact Puzzles are incredible pieces of art in and of themselves - the individual wooden pieces are like small sculptures. It's a pleasure to put them together, no matter the subject.

Beautiful PuzzleMar 06, 2012
By Daniel Berry My wife enjoys jigsaw puzzles, so this was her Christmas gift. Although it doesn't have a lot of pieces, she found it quite challenging. The quality was excellent, and the finished puzzle should have been framed.
