5Awesome puzzleJun 18, 2009

This jigsaw puzzle was probably the best and most fabulous puzzle I have ever done. I never wanted to call myself a puzzle addict, too much like dear old grandma, but if I can do puzzles like this, I am willing.

At first glance I knew this was not an ordinary puzzle, its intricate carving awed me. Normally I wouldn't do a puzzle with that few pieces or that picture, but this jigsaw is an exception. Laying out the individual section of the puzzle, drawing my fingers gently over them -- I was afraid to break such beautiful artwork -- I could see that each little part of the puzzle, part of a whole, was complete within itself. Each fraction had its own solid colors, weaved together to make a abstract suggestion, making you think of what you love best. Each piece had its own story.

I loved the way that the pieces were shaped. All the separate slivers had a unique pattern, such mastery I have never seen in all my years of solving puzzles. The way that they fit together, it was like silk or water, the way it flowed into one another. Before I started the puzzle I just had to admire each and every piece's shape. Not only was this jigsaw gorgeous, but it was a challenge. Hard, but not to the point where you get so frustrated that you don't want to look at it anymore. No where close to being a child's play-toy either. It didn't take me that long to finish, but that is probably because I couldn't stop. I highly recommend this puzzle to anyone and everyone.

4Artifact PuzzlesJul 06, 2009

This 54 piece puzzle is of Franz Marc's 1912 painting. Unlike a hand cut wooden jigsaw puzzle (or a cardboard puzzle), this piece exhibits a number of figural-style pieces with radial symmetry (4, 6 or 8) that interact nicely. Given that there are only 54 pieces, having 7 radial figurals, feels a bit much and makes the design a bit easy to put together. However, it is a nice demonstration of something that would be challenging for most hand cut puzzles and is interesting. Also, almost every interlock on this puzzle is of a different variety and due to the number of figurals, the piece size is highly variable.

5The Blue Horse Will Not Give You the BluesDec 16, 2011

I don't usually review products that have already been reviewed by three or four reviewers, unless I disagree with the reviews - but I like this puzzle so much that I'm going to make an exception....

In 1953 I was sitting in Mrs Dynes' second grade class - it was art time - and I opened a very large book of colored prints. I got no futher than the first print: Franz Marc's "Blue Horse." I was mesmerized! Almost 60 years later, I still love Franz Marc's work and especially this picture.

Franz Marc was a German expressionist painter and printmaker. Born in 1880, he was killed in the Battle of Verdun at the ripe old age of 36. He left behind a small body of colorful, sometimes very abstract, paintings and prints - most of which feature animals. He loved horses and the "blue horse" - for Marc the color blue represented masculinity and spirituality - was one of his favorite subjects. This particular blue horse was painted in 1912. And now lets get to the puzzle....

Artifact Puzzles is a small Seattle-based company specializing in wooden jigsaw puzzles. The pictures are printed using soy-based inks and the picture quality is excellent. The pictures are then bonded to 1/4 inch plywood. The intricate pieces are cut using laser technology - this allows for very clean, precise and complex cuts. To be blunt: if you are a puzzle person, any Artifact puzzle will give you a warm glow - they are a joy to handle and assemble.

At 54 pieces, I think "Blue Horse" is Artifact's smallest puzzle, (more typically, Artifact's small puzzles weigh in at about 80 pieces - their largest, with one or two exceptions, top out at about 300), and at only 5 by 7 inches, you can assemble it on almost any flat surface, (my wife and I did it once on the back of a briefcase). It's not hugely challenging - one of the other reviewers bought it for a ten year old who apparently enjoyed it - but the beauty and fit of the individual pieces and the picure as a whole make it a pleasure to put together. This is a puzzle to savour like a glass of vintage port after a satisfying meal, (and if you've checked the prices on port lately, you know that "Blue Horse" is a whole lot cheaper).

Like all of Artifact's small puzzles, "Blue Horse" is packaged in a colorful drawstring pouch.

I bought this puzzle for a ten-year old, who would have been more challenged by a more difficult puzzle, because of its unique craftsmanship and quality. The whimsy puzzle pieces and the thick cuts of layered wood were sure to make this gift special. He likes horses and I liked the idea of sending something artful... All these factors, and that it comes in an attractive drawstring bag, make it a very cool choice for any age. Apparently he thinks so too, and has enjoyed doing it over and over again. If you appreciate the unique, the artful, the quality, then I believe you will find this a treasured addition to your collection.
