5Artifact Laser-Cut Wooden Puzzle: 1592 MapSep 02, 2009
This 1592 Map image is our second laser-cut wooden jigsaw puzzle from Artifact. We had previously purchased the Bryn Barnard Dragon Puzzle (and posted a review). We were drawn to this image because of our love of nautical maps from the Age of Exploration. This 16th century map shows mankind's knowledge of the northern Atlantic Ocean in that era.
The amazing laser-cut technology used by the Artifact puzzle company allows for the creation of extraordinary piece shapes, some of which are called "whimsy" pieces. In this puzzle, the covey of whimsy pieces relates to things that could be found beneath the sea. Imagine our delight as we set out the puzzle pieces to find an octopus, a mermaid, a seahorse, a shark, a dolphin, a scuba diver, and many more. Our favorite piece was one depicting Neptune, holding a wonderfully crafted trident.
The pieces in this puzzle are exceptionally fun to examine individually, and are intricately shaped. We have always loved the feel of well-crafted wooden puzzle pieces. The ultimate "best feel", of course, comes when the puzzle is completely assembled! We found the puzzle both challenging and fun. Very satisfying!
We are getting seriously hooked on these 250-300 piece puzzles, and highly recommend them. We feel fortunate that this new company, Artifact, is producing puzzles of such variety and quality, and have already ordered our next batch!
